Considered the mother of the punk movement, Valeska Gert was known for her wild, anarchic tanztheatre solos of the Weimar era. She became known for the genre grotesque tanz. A fierce critic of the bourgeois class, Valeska challenged her audiences with performances that brought reality to the stage. As praised as she was polarizing her performances were potent, powerful and irresistible to watch. With a script written of her own words, including re-creations of her dances and original costume designs, Beautifully Grotesque: The Life of Valeska Gert, is a resurrection and love letter to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century that few have heard of.
